Gerold Edward Luebben was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1895. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin. In World War I he was drafted and stationed first at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, then took command of the army post at Fort Liscum near Valdez, Alaska.
